The divine physician...

... wants to heal you !

“It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.”

These words of Jesus, recorded in the Gospels, seem perfectly logical. Yet they reveal an essential truth about our relationship with God.

Jesus had just called Matthew, a tax collector—an occupation that was despised by the religious society of his day. Then He sat down to eat with tax collectors and people who were regarded as “sinners.” The Pharisees were shocked and asked His disciples:

“Why does your Teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”

Jesus answered them:

  • “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. [...] For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”
    Matthew 9:12–13

Jesus was not saying that some people are perfectly righteous and have no need of God. On the contrary, the Bible declares that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). But some people recognize their spiritual sickness, while others believe they are spiritually healthy.

  • Here is the real obstacle: believing that we are righteous, good, or religious enough not to need the Savior.

A sick person who refuses to acknowledge his condition will not go to the doctor. In the same way, a person who does not recognize his sin will not sincerely seek God’s forgiveness. He may compare his life with that of others, point to his good deeds, or reassure himself through religious practices. Yet no human work can erase sin or restore fellowship with God.

  • Jesus came for those who recognize their need.

He does not reject the sinner who comes to Him with a sincere heart. He does not excuse sin, but He welcomes the one who repents. He forgives, lifts up, transforms, and gives new life.

The Lord did not come merely to improve our outward behavior. He came to heal our hearts, cleanse our conscience, and reconcile us to God. At the cross, He bore our sins. Through His resurrection, He opens the way to a new life.

  • But to receive this grace, we must accept God’s diagnosis.

Sin is not merely a weakness, a mistake, or an imperfection. It is rebellion against God—the desire to live independently of Him. This spiritual sickness leads to separation from God. Yet Jesus Christ is the only remedy.

The Divine Physician does not deal only with outward appearances. He wants to reach the deepest places of the soul: pride, guilt, hardness of heart, wounds, sinful passions, and hidden thoughts. He does not merely want to bring temporary relief; He desires to save completely!

Perhaps you think you are too far from God, too guilty, or too broken. But Jesus came precisely to seek and to save that which was lost. No sin is too great for His forgiveness when our repentance is genuine.

  • On the other hand, the greatest danger would be to think: “I need nothing...”

Recognizing our spiritual sickness is not a hopeless humiliation; it is the beginning of healing. It means opening our heart to the One who still says today:

“Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
Matthew 11:28

Jesus Christ is the Physician we all need. He alone forgives, saves, restores, and gives eternal life.

  • “Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”
    Hebrews 4:16
